Bringing new life to the historical Kaartin Lasaretti block

Lundén Architecture Company has been granted a building permit for the renovation and development of the historical Kaartin Lasaretti block in Hietalahti, a historic harbour district in central Helsinki. The project is being developed by HGR Property Partners.

We are excited to announce that, once complete, Lundén Architecture will relocate its Helsinki office to the new premises. It is a truly unique opportunity to occupy a project of our own design.

The plan is based on LAC’s winning proposal from the 2025 invited competition organized by HGR Property Partners. It introduces high architectural quality and a strong identity, transforming the block into a multifunctional lively urban quarter that also enlivens the surroundings of Hietalahdentori, one of Helsinki’s prominent seaside squares.

The block features protected landmark buildings originally built as a hospital for the Kaarti battalion, with the oldest Engel designed section dating back to 1827. Over time, it has developed a rich layering of architecture, including Jussi Paatela’s 1943 laboratory building for VTT, later used by STUK and others.

The area is now entering a new phase of revitalization. LAC will renew and expand the existing VTT building as well as create inviting public green spaces. Wherever possible, existing building elements will be reused or repurposed. The design respects the block’s rich historical fabric while adding a contemporary and functional layer.
