Creating a sustainable and future-oriented urban district

Terävin karki, a consortium formed by Lundén Architecture Company, YIT, Renell Käppi Architects, in collaboration with COBE, WSP, and AFRY was selected by the City of Turku to be the future partner for developing the Kupittaa area. The design team responsible for the architecture, urban planning and landscape design consisted of Lundén Architecture Company, COBE and Renell Käppi Architects.

Location: Kupittaa, Turku

Program: Competition for urban development plan, campus, infrastructure and parking facilities

Size: 320 000 m2

Status: Invited project alliance competition winner, City planning ongoing

Client: City of Turku

Collaborators: YIT, COBE, Renell Käppi Architects, WSP, AFRY

Team: Eero Lundén, Petri Herrala, Carmen Lee, Feng Ye, Ida Gündogdu, XuDong Yan, Maija Parviainen

The aim of the project is to develop Kupittaa into an active and vibrant district for innovation and expertise. The new core will bring together diverse learning spaces, new types of workspaces and housing. A new centre is formed around an urban campus, which will be an open learning space and resource for the entire community.

The urban development project is situated at Kupittaa Station, 3km away from Turku Central Station and will become the second heart of Turku. Weaving together two city districts of Kupittaa and Itäharju, the current industrial site and existing Turku Science Park will transform into a hub for smart mobility and create a framework for a sustainable and future-oriented city. The multi-part project includes an overall urban development plan and a campus of about 25 000 sqm for the Turku Vocational Institute. It also includes an infrastructure project consisting of a mobility hub over the railway and parking facilities for about 1 500 vehicles.

The design not only strengthens connections within Turku, but also between Turku and Helsinki. It will integrate Kupittaa Railway Station and other mobility services, paving the way for the planned One Hour Train connection to Helsinki. The design creates a framework for a new district that supports an ecological way of life, as well as sets the direction for the city’s development towards a carbon-neutral future. The new district
extends the central area and urban structure of Turku. It also strengthens and enriches Turku’s urban landscape with a series of interconnected lush and biodiverse green and blue areas. The streets and paths within the site are designed to prioritize pedestrians and help shape an accessible and safe district.

The development phase started at the beginning of 2023, is estimated to be approximately 1.5 years, during which the new area plan for the area will also be prepared. The contract for the implementation phase will be signed in the fall of 2024, and the contract is estimated to be completed in 2027.
