Creating an urban neighbourhood with hybrid blocks
The quarter is part of a larger plan for the new Herttuankulma district, in Turku. The area plan will transform 16 hectares of industrial land in the harbour district into a residential area, extending the city’s centre towards the harbour and sea. The area will feature a network of green and public spaces and a lush boulevard leading to the Turku Castle. Construction of the blocks are underway and when complete, it will become a new vibrant neighbourhood in western Turku. |

The hybrid urban blocks are situated on the eastern part of the district, on the former premises of the Rettig Tobacco Factory. It will provide housing to 4400 residents and 6500 m2 of commercial space. The factory building will be transformed into an active recreational and commercial space and become the urban heart of the community. The courtyard housing blocks feature communal green spaces and an active ground level consisting of a mosaic of commercial spaces and common facilities.
